Thom Hilton – Waking Up From a Nap on a Long Day of Doing Nothing

Plus 1980s experimental work by AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz

With the guidance of his best friend and mystical grandfather, a young painter – anxiously awaiting his first gallery show – embarks on a surreal skateboard odyssey through Portland to discover the true value of his art.
Written and directed by local filmmaker Thom Hilton (Matinee Baby), Waking Up From a Nap on a Long Day of Doing Nothing has enjoyed sold-out screenings at Portland’s Clinton Street Theater, Academy Theater, Hollywood Theatre, and Movie Madness throughout 2026.  This intimate screening will include a conversation with some of the film’s cast & crew, as well as an opportunity to take a closer look at artworks, props, and costumes used onscreen.
Waking Up From a Nap on a Long Day of Doing Nothing was made possible by a community crowdfunding campaign with over seventy-five local donors and sponsorships by more than thirty local businesses.  The short’s centerpiece gallery scene was made in collaboration with fourteen local painters, illustrators, photographers, sculptors, furniture makers, and puppet designers.
